Duane Nelson

Tell us a little about your family.

I am the son of the late Reverend and Mrs. C. A. Nelson. My Dad is remembered as the preacher who sang “It’s Real” at camp meetings and General Conference. I am married to Denise Ammons of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and we have two children, Mindy Gerving and Joey Nelson.

Describe your spiritual journey.

Because my Dad was my pastor, I have always gone to church. There has never been a time in my life that I was not going to church. Events have always been much more important to me than the date of the event. I don’t remember the date of my baptism, but I can tell you that my Dad baptized me on a Sunday morning in very cold water. I received the Holy Ghost on June 6, 1960, but subsequent renewals mean more to me than the initial infilling.

What is your favorite Scripture in the Bible?

Philippians 3:10-14; “Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”

What is your music background?

My parents encouraged me to start playing the saxophone in the fifth-grade band. I do not own my original Conn saxophone, but I still own the saxophone that my parents bought me when I was a sophomore in high school. A few years ago, Denise and our church purchased me a new Dave Guardala saxophone. My saxophone is my worship instrument and I really enjoy playing it.

What is one of your favorite songs to play? Why is it your favorite?

I enjoy playing all of the old hymns. “It Is No Secret” and “I Am Thine O Lord” are two of my favorites.

What other talents do you have?

I can make people laugh, sometimes!

What is the best advise you have ever been given?

Live for God and your gift will make room for itself.

Where can we listen, purchase, and connect with you?

All of my recorded songs can be purchased on CDBaby. You can purchase a CD through my website Sunday Sax and you can reach me on Facebook.
